  1. Interesting controls in place in this experiment to ensure the bird wasn't just exhibiting learnt behaviour. The short stick first was to demonstrate that the bird was capable of thinking dynamically about its tools; had it been taught to simply use sticks to pick food, it would have given up once the short stick was unable to reach the meat. Instead it utilized it to gather rocks. The use of not one but three rocks was another control intended to demonstrate that dropping the rock in the box with the stick wasn't a coincidence. Finally the long stick is to demonstrate that it can differentiate between tools and recognize that the long stick would succeed where the short stick failed.

  3. I am from India … we have bed time full bunch of stories named Panchtantra….. in that one of them, we have same event where crow used pebbles in big jug to rise the water level so that crow can drink water… our INDIAN culture and history have each invention and research which are being done now a das… from missile to test tube babies and others…

  4. has anyone ever given one of these little dudes like a bunch of Lego and kind of see what would happen

  5. In Quran chapter no. 5 , AL-ma'eda ( the table ) God tell us about the story of Cain and Able . The story is found in old testament , but look what Quran says in verse 31 , after Cain has murdered Able :
( 31. Then God sent a raven digging the ground, to show him how to cover his brother's corpse. He said, “Woe to me! I was unable to be like this raven, and bury my brother's corpse.” So he became full of regrets. ) interesting ,,,

  6. INTELLIGENCE???? WHOS THE JUDGE? ISNT IT AMAZING THAT WE SPEND ENDLESS TIME, EFFORT, MONEY AND INTELLIGENCE ON TRYING TO FIND OUT IF ANIMALS ARE "INTELLIGENT"? WHICH SPECIES IS TAKES THE #1 SPOT IN POLLUTING THE ENTIRE PLANET, DESTROYING OUR RAINFOREST AT A RATE OF 2 ACRES PER SECOND TO MAKE ROOM TO FEED 72% OF OUR CROPS TO ANIMALS SO THAT WHEN WE EAT THEIR CORPSES WE ARE STRICKEN WITH HEART DISEASE AND COLORECTAL CANCER(#1 AND #2 CAUSE OF DEATH N US ALONE), SLAUGHTER 60 BILLION LAND ANIMALS AND TRILLIONS OF SEA ANIMALS EVERY YEAR FOR DESIRE NOT NECESSITY, HAVE SLAUGHTERED 3/4 OF THE OCEANS FISH POPULATION FOR DESIRE NOT NECESSITY, HAVE SLAUGHTERED 1 BILLION OF THEIR OWN DUE TO RELIGIOUS WARS…. YEAH.. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. AND… WE CLAIM THAT WE ARE MORE INTELLIGENT AND BASE THE INTELLIGENCE OF OTHER SPECIES ON OUR PERSPECTIVE.. WHATS SO INTELLIGENT ABOUT THE FASHION WEEK, PLAYSTATION, HUMMERS, HALOWEEN, ETC…

  7. god say in qoran : Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, “O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?” And he became of the regretful.
    Muhsin Khan
Then Allah sent a crow who scratched the ground to show him to hide the dead body of his brother. He (the murderer) said: “Woe to me! Am I not even able to be as this crow and to hide the dead body of my brother?” Then he became one of those who regretted.

  8. My question would be more How on Earth can we know animals have brains like us, and not correlate the idea that maybe some of them can think the exact way a baby can.

  9. Amazing bird! if I don't see the sequence numbers on the process, I can't imagine what is the step by step. Cleaver!

  10. Wouldn't it be cool if the bird just flew away and came back with the correct sized stick and just forget all of the stones and nonsense? You know, I almost think he could if he wanted to, but likes playing the game.

  11. do the same test with children. or some adults even and see who takes longer. I sincerely believe that some adults will take longer than the god damn crow

  12. Crows aren't stupid. I can walk out of my house and yell at a whole flock and they just stand there and look at me. As soon as I open the door with a pellet gun in my hand they take off.

  13. Why are these "parlor tricks" such a big deal in academic circles? If these lab rats spent some serious time in the real world they'd see many animals figure out far more complex situations, memorize far more hiding places, and are far more entertaining!

  14. As a farmer, I can tell you a dozen examples of the incredible intelligence of these birds.  I've noticed that they seem to watch humans doing things, and they learn from that.

  15. birds are some of the most highly evolved animals on the planet…descendants of the dinosaurs, surviving the greatest of mass extinctions…they do the dinosaurs proud!

  16. My first reaction to seeing the video is to ask the question "DId the problem's constraints facilitate solving the problem." There only appears to be one place to drop the stone. What if there were three holes the stones could be placed in. But then again perhaps the bird dropping a stone in exactly the same spot over and over is part of an existing behavior. Any way I have a lot of questions in regard to this experiment and wonder if it suffers from a design that leans towards a confirmation bias that 007 is a very intelligent crow. Perhaps it is a lack of ability to properly evaluate intelligence on the observers part that attributes a high level of intelligence to 007 vs. 007 being an intelligent crow.

  17. I think one of the main reasons humans are smarter than animals like this is because we developed language and we are able to learn from eachother and discuss very complex things through language. I think this played a large part in the evolution of our brain. I can go on and on about this shit because I love it, but yeah nice crow, smart fella.

  18. Das ist keine gewöhnliche, mitteleuropäische Raben-Krähe. Sie ist aus Südamerika. Schon Schnabel,Augen und Gesang zeigen das sehr deutlich!

  19. I won't say anything about the intelligence of crows, they are indeed smart animals. But I don't like to be cheated.
Though it seems to be a one take video, I found out that it's edited and perhaps formed by several takes who knows in which time elapse or even if it is the same crow or whatever other tricks…
The clue is the little stick. Before 1:56 the stick is entire. If you see the sequence between 1:56 and 1:59 you'll see that the little stick has a long splinter. Then in 2:00 and specially in the sequence 2:16 to 2:18, the stick is intact again with no splinter at all… So, the video does not show the reality.

  20. This crow is a good puzzle solver. We have other types of intelligence. The social intelligence, the math intelligence, the design or the cooking intelligence is also important.

There is a spark of ingenious in every animal. Every one of them is very good at something. Being good at many things is harder.

  21. Has it been trained before?
Because to me problem solving and learning abilities are two things to distinguish in order to understand how clever they are. In either case this is great accomplishment, but it characterizes differently on the interpretation.

  23. This short clip is made up of many different clips because you see no cameras in or ontop of any of the boxes yet the clip is showing footage from those angles, this is a made up composite of many different steps that the bird did at complete different times, still quite the smart bird!.

  24. Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful(Quran surah Al Maidah:31) All praises belongs to Allah

  26. It is amazing that this is actually a puzzle that humans would have to solve, yet, Corvids got it – and just after observation. This bird took a look, then took a think, then completely solved the problem.

  27. Any Crow alive is smarter that any retail shopper I pander!

I wanna work for crows! Can I pass the tests?!

    Are Crows on EBT yet?

  28. A Problem Solving Crow

I've given our Crows an occasional raw egg, medium size usually. The bold Crow always seems pleased and picks it up and flies away with it.

This morning I had a foam egg carton with four jumbo eggs firmly cemented in place from one of the four which was cracked and had leaked. Despite a good effort I was unable to extricate any of the eggs and was on the verge of dumping the carton when it occurred to me that the Crows might enjoy it. So I cut off the lid and, when the Crow family arrived to feed, laid the bottom half of the carton with the four eggs cemented in place out in the usual feeding spot. Then I threw out the dog food around it.

The Crows were initially cautious and avoided the egg carton, sticking to the dog food. After the dog food was pretty well cleaned up our bold Crow, the head of the clan, approached the egg carton. He approached carefully, took an exploratory peck and leaped backwards a couple of feet. After a few repetitions of that he decided the carton was safe and pecked open the cracked egg and ate the insides, then tried for a long time to extricate a cemented egg from the carton without success. He ended by pecking one of the remaining cemented eggs open and ate the contents. (I think he was sharing some of the goodies with the fledglings but not sure about that.) Then the Crow family left, leaving the carton with two eggs still cemented in it.

Now the story gets interesting. About a half hour later the bold Crow returned and with an air that he had decided exactly what to do, he deftly and quickly ripped away pieces of the foam carton until one of the eggs, with foam still attached, was separated. He then rolled the egg over and removed the pieces of foam sticking to the egg until it was bare, picked the big jumbo egg up and flew off with it. Not long after he returned and repeated the process with the last egg. His behavior clearly indicated he had thought of a solution while he was gone. I was astonished!(John Pitman)

crows.net response:Wow! Your report is very interesting indeed. There are all sorts of implications in the actions of the crow when he returned to tear apart the carton. Not the least of these is the obvious one that he had thought the situation over while he was away and arrived at a solution by a process of reasoning, while he was not in the same location as the egg carton. If crows can do that (and I certainly believe that they are capable of it), then our understanding of their intelligence must jump up several levels. I myself would think that solving a problem by reasoning, without experimentation, is a greater accomplishment than making a simple tool with which to grab food .

  31. Problem solving is indeed a interesting area regarding Crows, however I am far more interested in their communication abilities.
